The Music Box Cinema presents Mary Pickford in Suds (1920)

Mary Pickford is at her comedic and touching best in one of her most unusual and interesting roles, in her second production for United Artists, Suds(1920).  As Amanda, a plain laundress in beautifully recreated London settings (by Art Director Max Parker, whose later credits include DeMille’s The Road to Yesterday (1925) and The Volga Boatmen (1926) and Raoul Walsh’s The Roaring Twenties (1930), Pickford daydreams of being wooed by a nobleman, and tries to convince her Cockney co-workers that her fantasies are real.  Through a series of hilarious events that follow after she rescues a horse from a glue factory, her dreams of romance become real.  Print courtesy of the University of Southern California Hugh M. Hefner Moving Image Archive.  With a live music show and live film accompaniment by our Musical Director, Cliff Retallick.  Come early (at 6:45) for a free tour of the historic Woman’s Club of Hollywood building.  Wine and appetizers will be available (for cash only).  Tickets are available now at   https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-music-box-cinema-presents-mary-pickford-in-suds-1920-tickets-65075354136.

About Us

Our Mission

The sole mission of the Retroformat Coalition is to educate and inspire enthusiasm for the art and history of Silent Film. We fulfill this by recreating the original moviegoing experience of in-person screenings with live musical accompaniment, introducing new generations to the joy and power of early cinema.

Two Great Regular Screening Series!

Our newest series is The Music Box Cinema, with monthly screenings of great silent films plus great live musical acts at the historic Woman’s Club of Hollywood building. We are also continuing the long-running series Retroformat: Rare Silent Gems on 8mm and 16mm Film, now in its ninth year at the Steven Spielberg Screening Room of the American Cinematheque’s (formerly Grauman’s) Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. Live musical accompaniment is provided for all films by our Musical Director Cliff Retallick, L.A.'s premiere live film accompanist.
