Retroformat at Cinecon: The Untameable

Retroformat comes to Cinecon 55!  That’s right; this year, Retroformat returns to Cinecon for a special encore presentation of the little-known, ahead-of-its time, suspense-filled thriller, The Untameable (1923)!

Cinecon is a five-day celebration of film featuring screenings, celebrity guests, and one of the best movie memorabilia shows in the country. This Labor Day weekend, beginning Thursday night, August 29 and continuing through Monday afternoon, September 2, film fans attending the show will be treated to nearly fifty rare features and shorts, special shows and celebrity guests, and have an opportunity to purchase rare stills, posters and other collectibles.

In tribute to Cinecon’s founders, who began the festival by sharing their 8mm collections, this year Retroformat is presenting a special presentation of one of our best and rarest: The Untameable, expertly directed by Herbert Blache, featuring an amazing performance by Gladys Walton (who met her real-life boyfriend, Al Capone, on the set of this film). Walton plays Joy, who suffers from split personality disorder, as well as Joy’s alter-ego, the sociopathic Edna. Edna is fond of wearing leopard skins and whipping her maid, Ah Ming, played by Etta Lee, whose relationship to Joy has strong lesbian undertones. Handsome Malcolm McGregor co-stars as Chester Arnold, the man who loves Joy. John St. Polis plays the sinister Dr. Copin, who lives to regret his manipulation of Joy/Edna.

To see The Untameable, you will need at least a Day Pass to Cinecon. For more information, visit www.cinecon.org.

Our Mission

The sole mission of the Retroformat Coalition is to educate and inspire enthusiasm for the art and history of Silent Film. We fulfill this by recreating the original moviegoing experience of in-person screenings with live musical accompaniment, introducing new generations to the joy and power of early cinema.

Two Great Regular Screening Series!

Our newest series is The Music Box Cinema, with monthly screenings of great silent films plus great live musical acts at the historic Woman’s Club of Hollywood building. We are also continuing the long-running series Retroformat: Rare Silent Gems on 8mm and 16mm Film, now in its ninth year at the Steven Spielberg Screening Room of the American Cinematheque’s (formerly Grauman’s) Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. Live musical accompaniment is provided for all films by our Musical Director Cliff Retallick, L.A.'s premiere live film accompanist.
